Best 2.5G switch for a closet lab

Buy an 8-port fanless unmanaged box unless you already know you need VLANs or a 10G uplink.

Most first labs stall on gigabit because the NAS, the mini PC, and the desktop all share one old 1G switch. 2.5G over Cat5e is the cheapest real upgrade. You do not need 10G copper until a single flow is actually filling 2.5.

Skip

Skip random no-name 5-port toys with one 2.5G uplink and four 1G leftovers. Skip a $400 Omada PoE monster until you have APs that need that budget. Skip used 1G enterprise for this job. The whole point is the 2.5G ports.
