Labthrift Labthrift What to buy. What to skip. Why.

Written 9 Sep 2026. This is a how-to, not a product card.

A new router can wait

Find the leftover box first. Don't replace the house router because SSH or ads failed.

SSH hangs, lab won't resolve, or ads came back. The house already has a router. A UniFi Dream Machine, a new ASUS, or an ISP swap does not find the leftover box for you. Find the number: find the computer on the house network. Knock: is the computer still on?. After a wipe, the laptop still remembers the old ID: when SSH says the computer looks different. Two numbers after a cable: keep Wi-Fi off after a reboot.

When a new router is later

Come back to a new gateway only when the leftover box answers, the reservation sticks, and the house radio is actually dead in a room — not because ping timed out once. Extra Wi-Fi nodes wait: a mesh kit can wait. A managed switch waits: a VLAN can wait. Guest Wi-Fi waits with that switch note.

What next

Weekend path: your first weekend. Tick Lab plan after SSH from the couch works on the number you wrote down. House DNS stays point the house at the ad block. A pretty URL still waits: a pretty URL can wait.

Optional: find the leftover box as cards in ByteRush — same Labthrift passkey as Plan. Skip if you just want to keep reading.
