Written 9 Sep 2026. This is a how-to, not a product card.
Docker is not the first weekend
Pi-hole and the house share install on the leftover box. A compose stack can wait.
Forums love YAML. You do not need a container to finish the weekend path. House-wide ad block is the first useful thing. The share is a folder on that computer. Both are ordinary packages. A pretend computer inside the leftover box is the same later-skip as what a VM is.
What Docker is
A way to run a program in a box that shares the leftover box's kernel. Useful later, when you want a stack that is painful to install twice. It is not required for Pi-hole, Samba, or a small local chat. It is not a reason to buy a new mini PC this weekend.
When it can wait
If the job is ads, a house folder, or SSH from the couch, install the program. Tick Lab plan after it works. A compose file does not make those jobs more true. Photos and movies still wait: not the first service.
What next
First service: house-wide ad block. Share: a file share. A later pretend computer: what a VM is.
Optional: leftover box vs a later container as a sandbox in ByteRush โ same Labthrift passkey as Plan. Skip if you just want to keep reading.
Skip
- Skip Docker Desktop, Portainer, and a compose stack this weekend.
- Skip a second leftover box just to host containers.
- Skip a GPU because a forum ran the stack in Docker.
