2.5G vs 10G on a first NAS: when the NIC is the waste
A single HDD RAID 1 tops out around 150–210 MB/s. That is 1.2–1.7 Gbps. 2.5G is enough until the pool or the clients change.
The closet-switch pick is already written: best 2.5G switch. This page is NAS-side. Do not read it as another switch roundup.
| NAS NIC | Boxes in this lane | Implication |
|---|---|---|
| 1GbE only | DS224+, DS423+ | No NIC upgrade. Dual 1GbE, MTU 1500. ~110 MB/s per client. Buy these for DSM, not for throughput. |
| 2.5GbE | DXP2800 (1×), F2-425 / F4-425 (1×), AS5402T / AS5404T (2×), F4-424 Pro (2× LACP) | Matches a spinning RAID 1. Needs a 2.5G switch or a 2.5G client NIC. |
| 10G (mention only) | UGREEN DXP4800 Plus — already the 10G + Docker pick | Amazon B0D22JRHZB, UGREEN listed $619.99, SKU 35260, in the research file. Do not re-roundup that chassis here. |
10G is waste on day one if the only flow is one HDD mirror to one laptop. It becomes real when you add an SSD pool, many clients, or 4K edit-off-NAS. Then you also need a switch and DAC / optics money. Pair 2.5G NAS with a fanless 8-port. The existing switch guide prefers TP-Link TL-SG108S-M2. The older sibling still sold is TL-SG108-M2, Amazon B08ZHZL5Q7 — official max 15.6–15.65 W, fanless, 8× 2.5G. Buy the S-M2 unless the older card is actually cheaper today.
If you already bought a 10G NAS: MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN, official suggested $149, Amazon B07LFKGP1L / B08437RDM1 (listings around $136–$144.95 at research). 4× SFP+ + 1× 1GbE, fanless. Modules not included.
HDD math still has a CMR rule: Red Plus / IronWolf / N300 in the array. Skip EFAX / EZAZ / BarraCuda 3.5" 4 / 8 TB SMR. IronWolf 1–6 TB is 5400; ST8000VN004 is 7200. A 5400 RPM pair will not fill 2.5G on random I/O anyway. Drive guide.
Skip
Skip buying 10G copper because a YouTube thumbnail said so. Skip a DS224+ “upgrade” you cannot install — there is no PCIe slot. Skip a $400 managed PoE monster when the NAS is the only 2.5G host. Skip used 1G enterprise for this job.
