Written 9 Sep 2026. This is a how-to, not a product card.
A monitor can wait
SSH, ads, and the share after a reboot are enough. Don't buy a dashboard box tonight.
After the leftover box comes back, check three things from the couch: after a reboot, check the computer still does its jobs. If a job was on today and dies after every reboot, enable it: make house jobs start after every reboot. Uptime Kuma, Grafana, Home Assistant Yellow, and a second Pi “just to watch” do not make those two looks more true. A house outlet is still enough: you don't need a UPS yet.
When a dashboard is later
Come back to a green page only after SSH, ads, and the share have been boring for a week, and you still miss a quiet fail while you are out of the house. The leftover-box look stays see how long the computer has been awake. A second leftover box still waits: one leftover box is enough.
What next
Weekend path: your first weekend. Tick Lab plan after the three jobs answer. A mesh kit still waits: a mesh kit can wait.
Optional: after a reboot as a sandbox in ByteRush — same Labthrift passkey as Plan. Skip if you just want to keep reading.
Skip
- Skip Uptime Kuma, Grafana, and a “watch the lab” appliance this weekend.
- Skip a second Raspberry Pi so the leftover box has a node watching it.
- Skip Home Assistant Yellow because one reboot left a job off.
