Written 9 Sep 2026. This is a how-to, not a product card.
Kubernetes is not the first lab
Pi-hole is a package on the leftover box. A cluster, even a tiny one, can wait.
Forums love three nodes. You do not need them to finish the weekend path. House-wide ad block is the first useful thing. A container stack is already later: Docker is not the first weekend. A pretend computer is the same skip: what a VM is.
What Kubernetes is
A program that keeps other programs running across more than one computer. Useful later, when one leftover box is boring and you have a real reason to heal three copies of something. It is not required for ads, a house folder, or couch SSH. It is not a reason to buy three mini PCs this weekend.
When it can wait
If the job is Pi-hole, Samba, or a small local chat, install the program. Tick Lab plan after it works. YAML that says “three replicas” does not make those jobs more true. Photos and movies still wait: not the first service.
What next
First service: house-wide ad block. Container skip: Docker can wait. VM skip: what a VM is.
Optional: leftover box vs a later cluster as a sandbox in ByteRush — same Labthrift passkey as Plan. Skip if you just want to keep reading.
Skip
- Skip k3s, k0s, MicroK8s, and a Raspberry Pi cluster this weekend.
- Skip buying three leftover boxes so they can vote.
- Skip a GPU because a forum ran the stack on Kubernetes.
