Minisforum MS-01: the closet 10G node that replaces a used R630
A used Dell R630 is the default “I found a $200 server” impulse. The MS-01 is the retail pizza box that actually belongs in a closet. Every config on the maker page was sold out 22 Aug 2026. The product is still the one to wait for.
This is not another N100 shopping list. Dual 10G SFP+, dual 2.5G, USB4, three M.2, laptop-class Intel 12th/13th-gen (i5-12600H / i9-12900H / i9-13900H). Small chassis fan. Not a 1U PSU scream. jdhodges.com (Proxmox, 2026) logged idle 13–35 W. Contrast an R630-class idle around 70 W typical and 80–150 W once you add a second CPU, drives, and default fans — the heater math in used vs new.
Maker list starts $439.90 for the i5-12600H barebone. Configured 32 GB / 1 TB i9-13900H: jdhodges.com paid $1,016.58 at Newegg on 8 Feb 2026; Amazon same config ~$1,015.90 as of 5 Apr 2026. Skip the used Dell PowerEdge R630 / R640 as the closet host. We are not affiliating eBay 1U lots. Skip treating Amazon Renewed or a gray 1U as “the same ports, cheaper.” Form factor lives in 1U vs pizza box. The electric-bill sibling is N150 vs the 1U bill if you do not need 10G on the node itself.
