The cloud can wait

The leftover box is already a computer. A monthly VPS bill is not the first weekend.

The cloud is someone else's leftover box, metered. Useful later, when you want a machine that is not in the closet. It is not required for Pi-hole, the house share, or SSH from the couch. Those jobs stay on the house network: keep them inside.

What you already have

An old laptop or a Marketplace OptiPlex that still turns on. That is start with what you have. You already pay for power. A $5 VPS does not make ads skip faster. A public hostname is the same later-skip as a pretty URL can wait.

When a bill shows up

Idle disks, forgotten snapshots, and data leaving a region are how surprise invoices start. You do not need a budget alert on day one if you have not opened a cloud console. Tick Lab plan when the leftover box works. Don't open port 22 on a rented VM “just to practice.”
