Written 9 Sep 2026. This is a how-to, not a product card.
A rack can wait
The leftover box sits on a shelf. A 10-inch cabinet and a 19-inch 12U wait.
A rack does not make ads skip. One leftover box is enough: one leftover box. Plug a cable into the house router: a cable beats Wi-Fi. If you want a sketch of U height, that is Lab plan Closet map — a notebook, not CAD. Longer walk: the closet map is a sketch.
When steel can wait
When the leftover box is loud, hot, or in the walkway. When you already own 19-inch gear that will not sit on a shelf. Not because a forum said a lab needs 12U. A later wall cabinet, if the wall is actually too narrow, is a 10-inch mini rack.
What next
Weekend path: your first weekend. Don't buy a switch for one leftover box: a VLAN can wait.
Optional: leftover box vs a later rack as a sandbox in ByteRush — same Labthrift passkey as Plan. Skip if you just want to keep reading.
Skip
- Skip a 10-inch cabinet this weekend.
- Skip a 19-inch 12U so the leftover box “looks like a lab.”
- Skip buying 10-inch switches to match a cabinet you do not have.
